It’s finally March and my early tulips are already starting to peak up out of the ground and that excites me! If you love gardening as much as I do, you’re probably itching to get your hands in the dirt too! The snow has just melted after a few really nice days above 10 degrees Celsius and that’s a great sign of consistently warmer weather ahead.
Of course, now my wheels are spinning and I’m trying to think of what Spring-loving plants I can add to my containers. I am in Zone 5 and have had some good success with pansies. They are cooler-weather blooms that come in a variety of different colours. I’m partial to bright yellows and purple with a hint of white.
I made a trip to the garden centre this past week and was so overwhelmed with all the Spring colour. I couldn’t help but take it all in. There were rows and rows of gorgeous potted hydrangeas. I wanted to bring one home with me, but I know my space is limited for sun-loving indoor plants, so I have to be very picky. There is just something about being at the garden centre that makes me smile, maybe it’s all the color, the beautiful floral fragrances or maybe it’s warmer temperatures inside the greenhouses after a few cold months with overcast skies.
My goal was to simply pick up some pansies for my containers and see if they had any spider plants that would be safe around my two kittens. Once I got there, it was almost game over. I found the pansies, but then I started looking at the bulbs for autumn blooms and the seeds. They got the better of me and I picked up some Dahlia seeds and tubers for dinner-plate sized Dahlia blooms. I honestly don’t know why I picked all of those up because I have a lot of mature trees on my property that do not allow for much sunlight in my flower beds which has been challenging when trying to fill my flower beds. Fingers crossed that I have a good show of colour this summer … and I did pick up a spider plant.
At this point, nothing has been planted. I simply wanted to secure the pansies so that I would have enough for a few of my containers this Spring. I had to bring the pansies inside to protect them from the sub-zero temperatures we will be experiencing overnight here in Hamilton, Ontario. Better to be safe than sorry, I say.
I’m so excited to garden. I will be sharing everything that I plant this summer to help inspire some of you just starting out or as novice gardeners. I’ve been there and I am still always learning something new and looking for inspiration.
