We just finished Spring Break here in Hamilton, so things are back to normal, however we are in our third lockdown, so there isn’t the regular hustle and bustle of vehicles zipping up and down the streets. I took the week off to spend with my kids, but also wanted to cross off a few projects around the house that have been needing my attention. One of those projects was to re-paint my main bedroom and give it a facelift. It does occasionally get bogged down with laundry baskets and other items that don’t have a home. I wanted to change that. I wanted to create a space that was minimalistic with as little flat spaces to lay things down on. I am the queen of putting things on my dresser until it piles up so high, I can’t possibly put anything else on it for fear of it falling over. I’m not sure what part of me thinks that is okay. I need to work on that part of my psyche.
I have a method when it comes to painting a room. It goes something like this:
- Clear the room out of boxes, loose furniture, etc.;
- Dismantle all wall mounted items (curtain rods, framed artwork, etc.);
- Move as much of the furniture out of the room as possible;
- Clean the furniture;
- Clean the walls and baseboards to be painted with warm soapy water and a microfiber cloth;
- Remove the existing light fixture;
- Fill all holes with spackle, let dry, sand and re-spackle, let dry and sand again. Wipe down with warm damp cloth;
- Prime and paint the ceiling;
- Re-install the light fixture;
- Prime and paint the walls;
- Tape off the walls to paint the trim including window trim, door trim and baseboards;
- Paint the trim;
- Bring all the furniture back into the space that will be used to fit out the room;
- Hang all wall mounted items back up;
- Enjoy your new space.
So here’s the thing, since we are in lockdown, it’s been trying to say the least, to line up the new items for my bedroom. I’ve had an idea for months of what I’ve wanted to see in my bedroom, but didn’t want to purchase anything impulsively “just because”, so it’s been a long drawn out process and I still don’t have everything I want because the some of the home décor stores are currently closed.
As I was cleaning out my room before the painting started, I tried to decide what items I was going to keep and what items I wasn’t. I ended up donating a lot of it to a local neighbourhood “giving” group. I was lucky to find homes for just about everything which is a huge relief. Local donation centres are also closed due to the lockdown, so I am not able to donate to them. When items sit around my house for too long, I lose motivation to pack them up and drop them off, so I was really lucky.
Here is a photo of my room back in 2019. My two older boys used to share this room. My husband built these shelves so we could store books, games and other stackable toys. It served its purpose, but quickly became a dust collector. This room has gone thru many different paint colours, but when we took over the room, I had it painted Fencepost by Dulux. This is also the same colour we used in our livingroom and in my oldest son’s room.
At the moment, my bedroom has been completely painted, the light fixture has been installed. I am expecting one new item to arrive tomorrow and a couple other items later next week. Hopefully, by that time, we will have a better sense of when the lockdown will end so I can get out there to pick up a few items I’ve been patiently waiting to be re-stocked.
Once the room is finished, I’ll be able to share with you the final reveal of my updated main bedroom.
