It’s been a busy couple of weeks here. The temperatures outside have finally warmed up and we are gearing up for porch season.
I’m still making progress on my main bedroom, but our province-wide lockdown is slowing things down. I still think it’s worth it to update and share a few progress photos of my main bedroom so you have an idea of the direction I’m going.
I am still waiting for items to arrive via courier and I’m also still waiting for the home décor stores to open up so I can pick up a few items that I’ve been so patiently waiting for.

My main goal was to transform my bedroom from a dumping zone into a relaxing space for either myself or any guests that would be staying over at our place. We do not have a guest bedroom any longer now that our three boys each have asked for their own room. Our youngest and smallest child has the largest room in the entire house, but there are twin beds in that room that allow for a guest to bunk in his room with him should the need arise.
In prepping my space, I applied a fresh coat of paint as seen in my previous bedroom blog post found here. I went from white to white, but this time, the white is more cohesive, since I chose to use the same colour, different finishes for the walls, ceiling and trim. It really opened up the entire space which I love.
As mentioned previously, my room was easily a dumping zone for items that had no real home. I removed as many horizontal spaces as I could to prevent odds and ends from being placed in my room and so far, it’s working!
Here is a view of one of the dresser walls. Above the dresser were two wall mounted and ceiling hung wood shelves. While I loved having them there before for the kids’ games and toys, I no longer needed them for anything and they collected so much dust.
I removed the shelves, centred the dresser and cleaned away the other items on that wall. It’s a cleaner, crisper, fresher space now with no where really to place anything which is the goal.
On the bed wall, the bed sits in a little alcove which basically fits only the bed. We have a king-size bed. The boys enjoy hanging out in this room and will occasionally sleep in my room with me. My youngest makes a habit of sleeping in my room with me on the weekends. I honestly don’t mind. He’s such a cuddle monkey still.
I used to have a wall mounted floating shelf from IKEA which was useful for task lighting and to place books on etc., but it was collecting more than books over time and my kittens were finding it useful as well. It was just one more dust collecting place that I inevitably did not need, so I removed it as well.
Since I had eliminated a place for task lighting and a place to put a book or my phone, etc., I installed wall mounted task lighting from IKEA and covered the cords with cable covers that I purchased online here. I painted the cable covers the same colours as the walls which really takes the emphasis off them allowing the lights themselves to shine. I also purchased bedside caddies which have come in handy for storing my phone, a book and my reading glasses. The link to the bedside caddy can be found here.
While I loved seeing the black and white portraits of my three boys over my bed, I needed some colour and something fresher. I found an amazing Canadian artist on-line. She paints waves! I initially fell in love with her Christmas ornaments, so I purchased one. I was following her on Instagram and soon learned that she was releasing a new collection of paintings. They were beautiful. For at least a week or two, I kept looking at two paintings in particular. She is so very talented. Her ability to capture the lines of a wave are nothing short of brilliant. I soon contacted her asking her if the larger of the two was still available and it was! I’d say it was meant to be. Her painting now hangs over my bed. I love looking at it every single time I walk into my room. The artist’s name is Brittany Kirby and her business is in White Rock, British Columbia, Canada. You can find her website here. I encourage you to take a look at her website because she is incredibly talented.
On the closet wall, I once had an old tube-style RCA TV. I donated it, but I still had the book shelf which did not have doors and was filled with clutter. There was no hiding that mess! I donated as much as I could from my room, the shelves above the dresser, the floating shelf over my bed, as well as, the white bookshelf that once was nothing but an eye soar. It’s so hard to give up storage space, but I am trying so hard to rid myself of clutter to reduce the stress that comes with it.
Until the stores open and I can finish this space, I have only two black and white photos of places I have vacationed, framed in gold frames from IKEA. I love photographing vistas while on vacation and will try to capture content that I hope to one day frame. Thankfully, it has paid off a couple of times.
This is where I am at so far with my main bedroom re-fresh. I’m so happy with how it is coming along and can’t wait to finish it. I will post again once it is completed.

What an amazing and calming room transformation. I agree, clutter creates stress.

Thank you so much Tanya! You know all too well how cluttered this room could get. Not anymore 😉

It looks beautiful Shari! I LOVE that blue throw on the bed – it’s like an ocean wave which I’m sure you intended. 🙂 I will check out that artist as well! White Rock is close to me in Vancouver.

Thank you Sharon! I love mixing white with blues wherever I can. It reminds me of the water which I find incredibly relaxing. Yes, check Brittany Kirby out. She has been so amazing with my purchases. I’m a huge fan.
