Today’s blog post is one I’m excited to share about. We replaced our diningroom table with a new custom diningroom table built by my 17-year old son with the help of the staff at Crown Point Wood Co. here in Hamilton, Ontario.
When we purchased our home, we had the task of purchasing new furniture for the main floor which meant new livingroom furniture and new diningroom furniture. We ended up getting both sets at Parks Furniture here in Hamilton. The hard part was deciding together on a style that we both liked. I thought it was unusual for the husband to take the lead, but he voiced his opinion about choosing the furniture in keeping with the era of our hundred year old home. I wasn’t exactly on that page, but we pushed forward and purchased the furniture. For the time we had it, it did the job.
In 2013, I bought new livingroom furniture and gave away our old furniture to some friends in the neighbourhood who were looking for another set of livingroom furniture.
Our new furniture was white. A family with three young boys … not ideal. I heard plenty of comments from family and friends about having white furniture. One of neighbours even asked if the sectional was a gift?? … because who in their right mind with three young children would buy white furniture? LOL. Well, I guess I would. I did! I also covered them with white fleece blankets that I purchased at IKEA. Ten years later, it’s still in great condition.
As for our diningroom table, it was a solid wood custom table in an arts and crafts style, stained dark. Not exactly what I would have chosen, but we lived with it. I do love architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s arts and crafts style, so I did get to choose some of the details of the table and chairs, but still overall, I would have chosen an entirely different style all together from the beginning if it were up to me.
Well, in the early Spring of this year, I asked my 17 year old son who is very handy with tools and had already built some furniture for our home as school projects, if he would be up for the challenge of building us a new diningroom table. He said yes.
Immediately, I sold our current table for a good price and that money helped fund the cost of the new table. Of course, I still needed to get chairs for the new table, but I’ll tell you all about that in a second. We were without a diningroom table for eleven weeks.
I was offered a shop for my son to learn to build the table. The guys at Crown Point Wood Co. were so helpful and taught my son how to build our table from start to finish. I would have made 12 cuts and gone thru a few screws myself, LOL but now we have a gorgeous solid and well built ash table. I’m super proud of my son and am in love with our new table.
About a good month or so later, I finally got around to ordering a stain for the table. It was on back order, but came into stock earlier than I think they thought. For the local people, I purchased the stain at Exotic Woods in Burlington. The stain is Rubio Monocoat in Bourbon. No sealer required. I love the colour. It is perfect in our space and the diningroom feels so much lighter than with the old table.
Now let’s talk about the chairs! Currently, we are using collapsible card table chairs that I did a fun DIY project with. I’ll make sure to post the link here once I write the post. Our neighbours will be moving out of the city next Spring to be closer to their grown children and their families. They will be down-sizing so they will be getting new furniture for their apartment. The furniture will need to be much smaller than what they currently have. They have kindly already been donating beautiful artwork to us. It gives me great pleasure knowing that we will always have pieces of our wonderful neighbours here in our home. Along with the artwork, they will be giving us 7 of their woven diningroom chairs. I think they will look gorgeous with the table. I honestly cannot wait until we have a set of chairs to use. I will have to find three other chairs to complete the set, but I think that I can find two different chairs for the ends of the table that will compliment what we will already have. Fingers crossed.
Here is what the complete set looks like today. It has been such a fun project, both for myself and for my son. I think we make a great team.
I am an architectural technologist by trade, so I drew up some plans for our table. If you’d like a copy of the plans to this table, send me a message and I will send them to you!
This table seats 10 comfortably. The dimensions are 8’-7” x 3’-6” x 2’-6” high and this table has bread board ends. It can easily be styled as coastal or farmhouse.
Thank you so much for reading my post today. I’m so in love with our new diningroom table. It blends perfectly with the coastal style of our home and even more thankful that my son agreed to build this table for us.
I hope you will take time to subscribe to my blog. Please know that your subscription helps me tremendously. Thank you again.
