It’s the last week of April and my Spring tulip garden is in full bloom. The colours are gorgeous and fill me with so much happiness every time I look at them. I started the tulip garden almost 15 years ago, with no idea where I was going with it. I was not much of a gardener back then, so I was planting things that just looked nice. I think we all start out that way. Over time, I’ve been adding more and more bulbs, but it’s just been the past couple of years that I’ve decided to aim for a mostly white tulip garden. I don’t plan to remove the many colourful tulips that currently dominate my tulip garden, but I do plan to keep adding more and more white tulip bulbs as I go along. This post is about the colourful tulips that are currently in bloom. The white ones are just now starting to open. I will write another post about those in the next week or two once they have all opened up.
As I mentioned, I started planting tulip bulbs many years ago with no direction. Our front garden has evolved over the years and continues to evolve. This year, I think I may enlarge the front bed more easterly to add more sun loving perennials which will include more tulips. This portion of my garden receives the most sun throughout the day and therefore makes the most sense to enlarge there.
In addition to the tulips, I also have narcissus, hyacinth and miniature grape hyacinths which I absolutely love seeing in my garden. I have two peony bushes as well that will bloom in mid to late Spring.
Here is a photo of my front yard tulip garden:
Last week, it snowed and I was so worried about losing my tulips, so I tried to cover up as many as I could with what I had. This is what it looked like all covered up. I kept the flower bed covered up for 2 full days. Some of my daffodils were damaged in the process, but they are still hanging on.
Last Fall, I added the Golden Pearl Narcissus to this flower bed to try to deter unwanted rodents from de-heading my tulips. So far, I’ve been really lucky in my front flower bed, but not so lucky in my back flower bed. It’s unfortunate, but I am not ready to give up just yet.
So here is a gallery of the tulips that are currently blooming in my tulip garden.
And here are the daffodils (narcissus) growing in this same flower bed.
Every Spring this flower bed brings me so much joy. I’m like a kid in a candy store, just waiting to see all the colour emerge. I am trying to get to the point where I will have enough to cut a bouquet or two for inside without missing them in my garden. I’m not quite there yet.
