When I first began my quest to change my décor from a mish-mash of many different styles including no style at all, to Coastal décor, I was very excited. I found myself buying coastal décor magazines and searching coastal décor on the internet. It was the bright whites with the calming blues that always caught my eye. Before I knew it, I had more coastal décor magazines than I knew what to do with. I remember thinking to myself, the most common denominator were the white walls and from there, anything would be possible, so I started there, but unbeknownst to me, there was more than one colour of white. That’s right, more than one colour of white. Fortunately, I worked at an architectural firm with an in-office interior designer who I could turn to for help. We talked about my white wall issue and she explained to me why I didn’t want a bright white … it apparently has blue tones and would seem cold … and so it was at that time that I learned about the undertones of all the different shades of white. We settled on a colour of white that was warm and would look nice with a complimentary crisp white trim colour. From there, I purchased white furniture and that was probably the craziest thing I could have done as a mother to three young boys, but I promised to do my best to keep the furniture looking as good as I could and 6 years later, I’d say the furniture still looks pretty decent.
So I guess the questions was, What was my style? I mean, other than coastal? I needed to be more specific. Was my style nautical or beachy? Was it contemporary or was it traditional? I really had no idea, but one image continually plagued my mind and it was not an image of a house at all, moreover a beach from a movie scene. If you’ve seen the movie Nights in Rodanthe, you’ll know what I’m talking about. The muted colours of the ocean, the sky, the sand and the grasses along the beach, those were the colours that seemed so calming and really spoke to me. I wanted that, but I was constantly being pulled in by other beautiful colour palettes that were much brighter and seemed exciting to me, so I over the years, my décor has evolved from a bright coastal palette to a much more muted and calming coastal colour palette and I’m sure it will continue to evolve. That’s the great thing about décor, it is ever changing.
I have a large space in my home that was completely furnished by my husband. It was meant to be the “Man Cave” and for many years it was, however, it has become my home office and yet not much about its décor has changed. I’m still trying to decide what I want to do with this space. It needs some construction fixes that I’m not sure I’m up to myself, but I was thinking it might be a fun mother-son project to take on for my carpenter in-waiting.
I plan to add lots of plants to this space since it is really the only space my two kittens cannot access directly. It has a door at the bottom of a staircase that they are not permitted to enter unless they are being supervised. I’m hoping this space becomes an area used more often, not only during the cooler months as it gets very warm in the summer months, but all year round. I’m really looking forward to working on this space sometime in the near future. It’s been neglected far too long.
